DIY Treatments for Dry, Irritated Scalp

Dry and irritated scalp can be both embarrassing and painful. It commonly results in flakey patches and unmanageable dandruff. Dr. Marder created his Total Relief™ Shampoo and Conditioner line to help individuals who suffer from itching, flaking and dandruff of the scalp. Make the most of Dr. Marder’s Scalp Therapy by treating yourself to these ultra-moisturizing DIY hair masks before your shower!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Dry scalp is due in part to the body’s inability to produce an adequate amount of sebum, the moisturizing barrier that protects skin from irritants. EVOO is one of nature’s best moisturizers. Simply apply a generous amount of EVOO to your scalp and work it down the shaft of your hair. The rich properties in the EVOO will saturate the hair and nourish the scalp. You can leave this mask on for 30 minutes, one hour or even overnight. When you’re ready to wash it out, massage gently to break up any flakes you may have, and follow with the Total Relief™ Shampoo and Conditioner.

Organic, Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil: You can use this aromatic natural oil in the same way as the EVOO. Keep in mind that coconut oil is solid at room temperature. To liquefy it, you may run some warm water over the jar or simply spoon some out and let the heat from your hands melt it. You can massage your scalp with the coconut oil alone, or add sea salt to form a paste-like texture. Massage it into your scalp to calm any inflammation in the scalp and rinse off.

Tea Tree Oil + Extra Virgin Olive Oil: EVOO makes an appearance again! Combine ten parts EVOO to one part tea tree oil and dab on any irritated areas in the scalp. Tea tree oil is an antiseptic which means it helps calm inflammation and prevent infection. Frequent scratching of dry, itchy scalp can lead to broken skin that’s prone to infection. Simply dab the solution of tea tree oil and EVOO to the affected area, leave on for ten minutes and rinse out!
