Summer Heat & Dandruff

Summer Heat & Dandruff

What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is the shedding of the dead layer of skin on your scalp. Your scalp is always shedding old skin cells forming new cells to replace the old ones. Dandruff is the excess amount from this shedding. Dandruff is a naturally occurring and harmless process that everybody deals with. People with acne prone or oily skin are more likely to have dandruff. Other causes of dandruff include eczema, psoriasis, and cold weather.

How Does the Weather Affect Dandruff Production?

While dandruff can occur at anytime it is predominantly seasonal. It is most severe during the cold winter months. In winter, the cold air dries out the skin and makes the scalp flake more. Having a lack of moisture in the scalp will dry it out causing excessive flaking. An increase in indoor heat during the winter months further adds to the dryness of the scalp.

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff actually tends to  improve in the summer months. A bit of sun exposure is actually good for dandruff control. Having moderate exposure to natural sunlight and performing stress relief exercises help to control dandruff.
